Preparing Youth:
In our fast-changing world today's students must be ready to be life-long learners and problem-solvers. To help students prepare for the future, the Lincoln Board of Education is guided by a comprehensive set of goals for student instruction. These goals are constantly revised to reflect the changing needs of society and the roles that our students are expected to fill once they have graduated.
Students are expected to:
- Demonstrate competence and fluency in the essential skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, in the English language and mathematics.
- Think critically and creatively, using higher order thinking skills to make decisions, solve problems and create new perspectives and possibilities.
- Understand the important ideas from the arts, humanities, sciences and mathematics and understand the relationships among them.
- Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for living in a democracy and becoming a contributing member of society.
- Understand and celebrate the diversity and interdependence of our pluralistic, multicultural community, nation and world.
- Respect and care for themselves and others.
- Respect and care for the natural environment.
- Work with others productively and cooperatively.
- Develop the skills and attitudes essential to enter the work force.
- Become a life-long learner
The school board has also established a set of goals for teachers. After finding the most qualified teachers possible, it is assumed the maximum effectiveness of all staff will be achieved if the district will:
- Provide for the best contribution of each staff member to the common goals of the district through a rational and effective organizational structure;
- Stimulate each staff member to contribute his/her best efforts to the common goals of the district by developing a healthy organizational climate;
- Encourage an organizational point of view which sees purposeful change as an opportunity for improvement;
- Improve the individual contribution of staff members to school district goals through a cooperatively developed program of evaluation aimed at retaining the most highly qualified staff.
The complete set of goals for public education goes beyond what is listed. Lincoln Public Schools is operated to make these goals a reality for the benefit of all students.
