Business Education
Business Education provides individuals with essential business education, training, and experiences needed to live and work productively in a changing global society.
Business Education provides a comprehensive program with instruction both for business and about business while striving for flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of industry and society. Students are prepared with broad transferable current skills needed in their personal lives and in the job market. They are prepared to think, problem solve, and function in new and emerging technological occupations, as well as to reach maximum potential in higher education.

Lincoln Public Schools hosts first annual "Money Smart Week"

One week after American voters said the number one issue was the economy, the Nebraska Financial Education Coalition coordinated the first annual statewide "Money Smart Week" from Nov. 10 - 14. The collaboration included schools, libraries, churches, Chambers of Commerce, banks, credit unions, non-profits and any entity that has vested interest in the financial education of Nebraskans.
The main goal of "Money Smart Week" was to provide classes, events, programs, seminars and workshops to help students, families, business, employees, homeowners, etc. expand knowledge and improved financial literacy.
Lincoln Northeast High School: Public information flyers and displays Business students created two slogans: "Get Money Smart!" and "Money Smart Week - It isn't what you earn, but what you learn!"
Lincoln East High School & Lincoln High School: Credit, Saving, Investing, Personal Finance
Speakers from Wells Fargo spoke to students at both high schools. At East, DECA member Matt Macoubre, senior, coordinated the presentations as part of his Advanced Marketing class. Two hundred students turned out to hear Mike Gleason and Angie Jones from Wells Fargo. At Lincoln High, 505 students attended seven Wells Fargo presentations. (Lincoln Southeast High School also hosted Wells Fargo reps.)
Lefler Middle School and Scott Middle School: UNL Students in Free Enterprise
Students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presented "Trade Around the World" to educate middle level students about globalization, multi-national corporations, financial markets and monetary values.
According to Carol Andringa, LPS Curriculum Specialist, "LPS teaches personal finance skills to all students." The statewide "Money Smart Week" enhances the LPS curriculum with "real life" situations.

Lincoln East Accounting I Team places 9th in the Fall 2008 Finance Challenge.
Jennifer Davidson, Council Associate of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education announced on November 18, 2008 that over 250 teams and 750 students participated in the 2008 Fanance Challenge in Nebraska. The Lincoln East Accounting I team placed 9th out the 250 teams and the Accounting teacher is Lori Anderson.
Lincoln Teachers Attend Mountain Plains Business Education Association Conference
Seven Lincoln business educators attended the regional conference of the Mountain Plains Business Education Association, held in Lincoln at the Embassy Suites, from June 19-21, 2008. The conference theme was "Business Education: A Global Journey." Educational sessions for educators included topics on technology, entrepreneurship, e-Bay curriculum, personal fianance business panel, new teacher resources, as well as hands-on training in Office 2007. Bonnie Malcolm presented a session on "The Bottom Line in Accounting", using Excel as a study aid and to reduce consumable costs. The teachers attending from Lincoln were Deb Wolken and Colleen Childers of Lincoln Northeast, Lori Anderson of Lincoln East, Bill Myers of Lincoln High, Marge Kneifl of Lincoln Southwest, Bonnie Malcolm of Lincoln North Star/CTE DO and Carol Andringa, Career and Technical Education Curriculum Specialist.
The Mountain Plains Business Education Association is the 9-state regional affiliate of the National Business Education Association, the professional association for business eductors who teach at the middle and secondary levels, post-secondary, and college/university levels. The conference was hosted by the Nebraska State Business Education Association. Three local teachers served on the conference planning commitee for this conference: Deb Wolken of Lincoln Northeast, Lori Anderson, Lincoln East and Bonnie Malcolm of North Star/CTE.
Five Lincoln Business Teachers Receive BEST Awards
The following five Lincoln teachers were recognized by the Nebraska Department of Education at the Nebraska Career Education Conference held Tuesday, June 10, in Kearney. The 18th annual BEST - Belong, Study, and Travel - awards were presented to individuals whose professional activities influenced business and marketing education in Nebraska during the past year by their involvement in professional associations, community and school activities, professional/leadership development, and/or service to the business education profession. Each award recipient contributed significantly to the quality of education in his/her community and the state. BEST awards exemplify superior qualities, including dedication to students, community outreach and continual classroom improvement efforts. The 2008 Lincoln awards recipients are: Lori Anderson of Lincoln East, Bonnie Malcolm of North Star/District Office, Judy Noteboom of Southwest, Deb Wolken of Lincoln Northeast and Carol Andringa Curriculum Specialist for Career and Technical Education.
LPS Teachers attend 2008 Nebraska Career Education Conference
Twenty two Career & Technical Education teachers from LPS attended the NCE conference in Kearney on June 10 and 11. The professional development strands were divided into Best Practices, Collaboration and Partnerships, Planning and Management, Teaching Strategies, and Technology and Tools. The Lincoln Public Schools’ Family and Consumer Science Teachers that attended were: Alicia Beck, Teresa Fortney, Denise Haag, Sharon Holliday, Marjorie Keep, Sherry McCranie, Mary Ann Myers, Rebecca Moock, and Sheri Moser. The Business teachers that attended were Lori Anderson, Michael Champagne, Colleen Childers, Trudy Hines, Marjorie Kneifl, William Myers, Judith Noteboom, Shannon Quible, Debra Wolken, Bonnie Malcolm and Carol Andringa, CTE Curriculum Specialist.
The following Business teachers attended a pre-conference Office 2007 workshop on Monday, June 9 to prepare for the move to the new Office 2007 software in their classrooms this coming fall: Lori Anderson, Michael Champagne, Colleen Childers, Marjorie Kneifl, Bill Myers, Judy Noteboom, Shannon Quible, and Deb Wolken. The same day the following Family and Consumer Science teachers attended a workshop on Food Product Development: Teresa Fortney, Sharon Holliday, Sherry McCrani; and Mary Ann Myers attended a Knife Skills, a Basic Cookery workshop.
The Association of Career & Technical Education held a Leadership Workshop with the National Executive Director, Jan Bray as the presenter. Bonnie Malcolm, President of the state association, ACTEN, facilitated the workshop with Alicia Beck, FCSTN President and Denise Haag past-president in attendance.
Stock Market Game Awards
Congratulations to Dani Fusco, Lincoln Pound Middle School the sponsor of the 2nd place middle division team. Dani and her students were recognized at the Stock Market Game Awards Luncheon sponsored by the Nebraska Council on Economic Education.
Trudy Hines
Worldwide Teacher of the Year
The 2008 JA Worldwide Teacher of the Year Award winner is Ms.Trudy Hines, of the Entreprreneurship Focus Program. She was nominated by Junior Achievement of Lincoln, Inc and is the recipient of a $2,500 cash award. Ms Hines will be an honored guest at an upcoming JA Worldwide event.
