Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Rally

The planning committee and community stakeholders for the 23^rd Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Rally and March are pleased to announce the January 15, 2018, theme and activities associated with the annual experience.

The decisions we make today will impact what is above the fold tomorrow!

 “Youth scholars have planned an event to inspire, engage, and educate the community on how the headlines, actions, and front page issues of today impact the future.  Our committee is remaining vigilant and mindful of those once prominent headlines that stirred us to act in the 1960’s.  Our goal is to develop a program with content recognizing the contribution of youth and others who have been instrumental in keeping the dreams of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dr. Leola Bullock on the front page,” said planning committee member Sophia Olson.

The Youth Rally and March is organized by a diverse group of area youth and is held in conjunction with the national recognition of the birthday of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  All components are intended to celebrate his legacy and the mission of the planning committee: “…promotion of the life and dream of the late Rev. Dr. King, Jr. through positive youth action in the community.”

The January 15^th Call to Action experience will include content intended to inspire, educate, and entertain.  Content will include original and adapted work including but not limited to:  Plaintiff: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee Challenges the School System; Call to Action keynote – From Paper to Pixel, How The Headlines of the Past and Present Intersect; Sacrifices For You – A Letter from Dr. Leola Bullock; the Idea Scholars of Belmont Elementary School (Lincoln) performing a choral reading; Be the Headline dignitary challenge; Because of Them We Can tribute and recognition; and performances by Ignite Choir and Freedom Dancers of the Edge Dance Academy.  The day’s events will begin with a pre-rally celebration emceed by comedian and inspirational speaker Jarell Roach.  Activities will include performances from I Am Dance Performance Academy, face painting by the Lincoln Southwest High School girls’ basketball program, Lincoln High Drum Line, the annual I Am Somebody youth pledge, and more.

Pre-rally doors open at 8:00 a.m., and the program begins at 8:45 a.m. in the UNL Student Union Ballroom at 14^th & R St., and is followed by a Unifying March at 9:45 a.m. through the streets of downtown Lincoln, climaxing with the Call to Action program at 10:30 a.m. (or when the marchers arrive and are seated) in the Warner Chamber at the Nebraska State Capitol.
