TCA students honored by NY Times for their vocabulary video

Two students at The Career Academy have been recognized by The New York Times for a creative, 15-second video they created that involved pronouncing, defining and giving a word’s part of speech, all while trying to depict the word’s meaning.

Maliya Harrison and Kalani Thomas, both 11th-graders in the Criminal Justice pathway, chose the word “telekinesis” for their video, which they created on the TikTok app. They earned honorable mention from more than 800 high school student entries in the annual NY Times Learning Network contest. Students could choose from more than 2,000 words.

Harrison and Thomas created the video as part of their English class, taught by Michelle Fonck. Their home high school is Lincoln High School and their Southeast Community College pathway instructor is Ronicka Schottel.
