LPS custodial staff hands-on in helping community

Members of the Lincoln Public Schools Custodial Operations team have stepped up in a big way to help the community. Using patterns, they’re cutting out pieces of Tyvek - a material used in building construction - that in turn will be sewn and supplied to local healthcare workers and first responders to wear as personal protective clothing.

City of Lincoln Unified Command reached out to LPS this week with the request for staff or volunteers to help with the project.

“It didn't take long to get the needed staff members to commit to this important effort,” said LPS Director of Operations Scott Wieskamp.

They started their work Wednesday in the McPhee Elementary School gym and produced more than 120 of the protective gowns, which were sent to Nebraska Innovation Campus to be finished.

Wieskamp said LPS will likely add a second location next week to increase production.
