North Star art students win Hastings College mural contest

A group of art students from Lincoln North Star High School recently won a mural contest held by Hastings College, edging out 30 other teams from high schools across the state.

The students are part of Brooke Gillotti’s AP art class. The theme for this year’s Hastings College Mural Competition was “Just Desserts.” The winning students were Reece Towle, Reem Alwan, Kendra Limon, Lana Huetson, Amber Bolich and Schylar Collins.

The competition is typically held inside the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center on the Hastings College campus. This year it was held via Zoom, with the college still providing 36 inch by 76 inch vinyl banners and paint.

They learned of their victory during a virtual awards announcement on Facebook.

“After a rough day at volleyball practice, I got out of practice and found out we won and it made the whole day better because of it," Towle said.

Besides winning a handmade art trophy, the students also won the opportunity to have their work exhibited on campus.
