LPS Science Fair reignites love for learning

The annual LPS Science Fair, sponsored by Zoetis and Haleon, brought 150 students to the Lancaster Event Center on March 2 to present their projects. Community partners also provided engaging and educational activities for students and their families with hands-on exhibits and booths.

Students’ projects were judged on both verbal and visual presentation which included thoroughness of display, technical skill and scientific thought. Students in grades five through eight are able to present projects at the science fair. This was the first year in person since 2020 and many of the presenters were there for the first time, including Evan, a fifth grade student at Zeman Elementary.

Evan’s project focused on answering the question which plant could absorb the most carbon dioxide? Evan chose three different plants to test his theory, and even made an enclosed box for the plants for his testing. Evan said he had a lot of fun planning his project, and enjoyed the opportunity to learn new things outside of school.

“The most fun part of my project was measuring the carbon dioxide,” Evan said. “Presenting and explaining how this all works is also very fun. You learn a lot of information.”

More than 170 volunteers and judges helped the science fair run smoothly this year. Karin Hanisch works at Zoetis and has been a judge for the LPS Science Fair since 2015. She said she loves the fact that an opportunity like the science fair is available to students, as it encourages their independent thinking.

“I hope they really enjoy learning and see that science is so accessible and is everywhere around them,” Hanisch said. “Even if they don’t think they want to be a scientist as a career, they can still ask questions and find answers every day.”

Student’s received a purple, blue or red ribbon based on their scores from the judges, along with a certificate. There was also an opportunity to win some fun and educational prizes via a drawing at the end of the event.

When asked if he would be returning for next year’s science fair, Evan’s answer was clear.

“Yes, definitely.”
