Northwest High School invited the community to commemorate a year of growth and the end of construction.
The Falcons held their building dedication ceremony Oct. 8. Northwest opened its doors in the fall of 2022 with more than 500 ninth- through 11th-grade students. Now, close to 930 students walk the hallways of Lincoln Public Schools’ seventh high school.
“This dedication is a testament to the collective vision, unwavering support of our entire community. Together, we have built a nurturing and inspiring environment where our students can learn, grow and flourish,” Northwest Principal Cedric Cooper said.
Students were also instrumental to the event. The ceremony featured musical selections from Northwest’s orchestra, who displayed Falcon pride playing their school’s song. Three student speakers also shared the podium with LPS leaders to reflect what Northwest means to them, like senior Hajar who wanted a new beginning.
“I came with nothing other than my backpack slung over my shoulder in the hopes of building myself up from scratch alongside this new school,” she said. “Needless to say, if it weren't for Northwest’s timely opening I truly don’t believe I’d be where I am today. A new school brings opportunity and with that opportunity comes the ability to shape history by simply existing.”
Lincoln Board of Education members Lanny Boswell, Barbara Baier and Don Mayhew and LPS Superintendent Paul Gausman helped celebrate the milestone.
“This is a moment that celebrates so many great things. The opening of a brand-new and vibrant school. The strengthening of a neighborhood. The strengthening of a community. And a time to honor the grit and dedication of our staff and students,” Gausman said.
“Within these walls, futures will be shaped. Dreams will take root and soar to new heights. Here, our Falcons will not only learn history, math, science and English, but will also cultivate critical thinking, creativity and a sense of responsibility to our community,” Boswell said. “This school is a place where lifelong friendships are forged, where mentors will inspire, and where every student will find their unique path to success.”
After the formal program, community guests toured the facility and enjoyed light refreshments.
