Staff Spotlight: Lameaa Kambol - student advocate at Northeast High School

November 1, 2024

Every week, we’ll shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! Get to know the wonderful people making a positive impact across various areas within LPS. This week, meet Lameaa Kambol, student advocate at Northeast High School.

“Lameaa has worked as a student advocate in our 201 room, which is where students go to process if they were unable to follow a classroom expectation. Lameaa is always calm and collected as she works with some kids who take some additional patience as they work to take accountability for their behavior. Watching her work to understand the perspective of the students as well as challenge them to consider their reactions to the situations is just incredible. Lameaa strikes a positive balance of empathetic and firm as she helps restore students to their classroom after an out-of-class movement. She is a gifted facilitator between students and staff, helping each person to better understand the perspective of the other in the situation.” - Malinda Jean Baptiste, school counselor

In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
I'm a student advocate in room 201 at LNE. We use restorative practices to manage and address student behaviors. Our goal is to help students take responsibility for their actions, improve their conflict resolution skills and build stronger relationships.

How long have you worked for LPS?
I have been with LPS for four years. I started as a para with Lincoln Southeast before my position at Northeast.

What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
I was inspired to join this position because of my own experiences with adversity as a student. I believe that students who struggle behaviorally need positive adults who truly care and believe in them to inspire change.

What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
My favorite part of working at Northeast is the community. We have wonderful people in the building who genuinely care for our students. The most rewarding aspect of my job is building relationships with students and witnessing their growth journeys.

Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I sure did! I attended Elliott, West Lincoln, Schoo, Goodrich, North Star then graduated from Northeast High School.

What path did you take after completing your formal education?
After high school, I attended Southeast Community College and the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, focusing on sociology and child, youth and family studies!

What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
What I enjoy most about the Lincoln community is its strong sense of unity. I also appreciate the diversity within our community because it provides valuable perspectives and experiences.

Share a shout out to a teacher who impacted your life.
I want to recognize Kelly Bowers, a former reading teacher of mine at Goodrich Middle School who had a big impact on my life and taught me so much more than just academics. Mrs. Bowers inspired me to be a supportive, fun and caring adult. She valued the school's diversity and incorporated it into our lessons. One of my favorite memories is when she organized a food day and let us bring in dishes from our cultures. It was a great way to celebrate our differences and learn from each other while enjoying good food!
