Meet LPS Focus Program Scholar: Anna, Lincoln Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps
November 1, 2024
Lincoln Public Schools Focus Programs are a customized high school experience rooted in connection and opportunities.
LPS offers our scholars - like Northeast junior Anna - almost a dozen focus programs where they can choose their journeys.
Anna learned about the Lincoln Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) from her older brother. Hearing his positive experience, she decided to give the program a try herself. She is also enrolled in the Science Focus Program.
Read more about Anna’s AFJROTC experience in this Q&A as she is one of our featured Focus Program Scholars.

Home High School: Northeast High School
Grade: 11
Focus Program: Lincoln Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC)
Why did you choose the AFJROTC Program?
My brother did it and it seemed like something I would like. I have thought about going into one of the military branches. I thought that AFJROTC would be fun and could help with going into a branch.
What do you like most about the AFJROTC Program?
I like the marching and physical training (PT) that we do because it is more active and more enjoyable.
What makes the AFJROTC Program different?
We do a lot of different things and spend our class time differently. For example, almost every day we do something different like PT, marching, uniforms and class time.
How do you get to explore your passions or interests at the AFJROTC Program?
I get to do many different things in AFJROTC like marching, PT, trail clean-ups and going on field trips, which allows me to explore different things.
How has attending the AFJROTC Program empowered you as a student?
It has helped me be less shy and has helped me become more of a leader.
What are your relationships with other students and staff like within the AFJROTC Program?
The people in the program that I am friends with are really nice and I enjoy hanging out with them.
How has being a part of a LPS Focus Program added to your high school experience?
It has helped me learn marching, uniforms and leadership skills, allowing me to do things that I wouldn’t have done if there wasn’t a program. It has helped me be a better student.
How has the AFJROTC Program prepared you for the future?
It has prepared me to be a better leader by teaching me leadership skills and helping me get out of my shell. This can help me lead others better.
Why are focus programs like the AFJROTC Program important to high school students?
They help them do things they are interested in and also help them learn new things and have better opportunities.
What is the greatest thing you’ve learned since attending the AFJROTC Program?
I have learned a lot about working together as a team. This is very important because teamwork in a lot of places is a good thing to have and it is also good to have teamwork in AFJROTC.
Choose your passion. Choose your community. Choose your future with LPS Focus Programs.
